The Finest Gifts Are Commissioned, Not Purchased

July 7, 2026 at 12:59 pm

Latvian classical composer Jekabs Tutins creates bespoke classical compositions for weddings, anniversaries, family celebrations and other exceptional occasions. Inspired by the European classical tradition, each private music commission is written exclusively for one client, transforming personal stories into original works of art that become part of a family's cultural legacy.

Portraits celebrated marriages. Architecture marked the rise of dynasties. Sculptures honoured remarkable achievements. Composers were entrusted with writing music for coronations, weddings, births and celebrations that would define a family's history for generations to come. Commissioning art was never an extravagant gesture; it was an acknowledgement that certain moments deserved to outlive the people who experienced them.

Although the world has changed dramatically, that idea has not.

Today we can purchase almost anything within minutes. Luxury watches, exceptional jewellery, rare wines and collector's automobiles are more accessible than at any other point in history. Yet for all their craftsmanship, they have one characteristic in common: they were created before their future owner was ever known.

An original composition begins differently. It begins with people.

Before a single note is written, there is a conversation about the occasion, the family, the memories worth preserving and the emotions that should remain long after the celebration has ended. Only then does the music begin to take shape. Every melody, every harmony and every musical decision is guided by a story that belongs to no one else.

This is why a private music commission cannot be compared to an ordinary luxury purchase. It is not selected from an existing collection, nor adapted from a previous work. It is conceived from the very beginning for one individual, one family or one institution, and it will never be repeated in exactly the same form.

As a Latvian classical composer, my work is rooted in the European classical tradition while responding to the lives of contemporary clients. Some commissions are written for intimate piano performances, others for string quartet, chamber ensemble or full orchestra. Some accompany wedding ceremonies, while others celebrate anniversaries, honour extraordinary achievements or become gifts passed from one generation to the next. The occasion may differ, but the intention remains constant: to create music that deserves to become part of a family's history.

There is another reason why commissioned compositions have become increasingly relevant today. We live in an era defined by instant production. Artificial intelligence can generate music in seconds, luxury brands release thousands of identical products, and almost every object can be reproduced indefinitely. Originality has become one of the rarest luxuries of all.

A bespoke classical composition represents the opposite. It demands time, conversation, craftsmanship and artistic judgement. It cannot exist before the people for whom it is written exist. Its value lies not only in the music itself, but in the relationship between composer and commissioner, and in the knowledge that no one else will ever possess that same work.
